Equipped with the right applications, a computer can be of great help in virtually any domain of activity. When it comes to designing and precision, no other tool is as accurate as a computer. Moreover, specialized applications such as AutoCAD give you the possibility to design nearly anything ranging from art, to complex mechanical parts or even buildings.
Suitable for business environments and experienced users
After a decent amount of time spent installing the application on your system, you are ready to fire it up. Thanks to the office suite like interface, all of its features are cleverly organized in categories. At a first look, it looks easy enough to use, but the abundance of features it comes equipped with leaves room for second thoughts.
Create 2D and 3D objects
You can make use of basic geometrical shapes to define your objects, as well as draw custom ones. Needless to say that you can take advantage of a multitude of tools that aim to enhance precision. A grid can be enabled so that you can easily snap elements, as well as adding anchor points to fully customize shapes.
With a little imagination and patience on your behalf, nearly anything can be achieved. Available tools allow you to create 3D objects from scratch and have them fully enhanced with high-quality textures. A powerful navigation pane is put at your disposal so that you can carefully position the camera to get a clearer view of the area of interest.
Various export possibilities
Similar to a modern web browser, each project is displayed in its own tab. This comes in handy, especially for comparison views. Moreover, layouts and layers also play important roles, as it makes objects handling a little easier.
Sine the application is not the easiest to carry around, requiring a slightly sophisticated machine to properly run, there are several export options put at your disposal so that the projects itself can be moved around.
Aside from the application specific format, you can save as an image file of multiple types, PDF, FBX and a few more. Additionally, it can be sent via email, directly printed out on a sheet of paper, or even sent to a 3D printing service, if available.
To end with
All in all, AutoCAD remains one of the top applications used by professionals to achieve great precision with projects of nearly any type. It encourages usage with incredible offers for student licenses so you get acquainted with its abundance of features early on. A lot can be said about what it can and can't do, but the true surprise lies in discovering it step-by-step.

Download AutoCAD (2018): This AutoCAD 2018 download includes the Autodesk application and a data folder containing user files and files created by the application. This release also includes the Autodesk Application Programming Interface (API) for developers to create AutoCAD add-ons and extensions for use in the same or other AutoCAD programs.
Autodesk Releases AutoCAD Installer Versions
AutoCAD 2013 is now available as an installer. This new version was introduced to address product and application issues identified by AutoCAD users and to simplify the process of upgrading from earlier versions of AutoCAD.
AutoCAD 2013 provides significant new features and enhancements over AutoCAD 2012, including improved Performance (a new process scheduling algorithm) and graphics, increased model size limits, “layered” views, more flexible and intelligent drawing options, enhanced window and print capability, enhanced cross sectioning tools and additional functionality for text and geometric tools. These features enable AutoCAD to produce higher-quality drawings more quickly. AutoCAD 2013 is available as a free upgrade for users of AutoCAD 2012.
The following guides provide additional information about AutoCAD 2013.
AutoCAD 2013 : More Info
Over the years, the developers have added many custom drawing extensions to AutoCAD. Two early notable extensions were the LOOP statement and ANSYS drawings (Autodesk ANSYS extension).
In 2009, Autodesk announced the decommissioning of the plugin framework with the release of Autodesk’s “AutoCAD 2009 Extended” and Autodesk’s “AutoCAD 2009 Systems Enhancement.” This release was the first to use the AutoCAD 2009 format, in order to “make it easier for customers to port their existing applications from previous versions to AutoCAD 2009,” the company said at the time.
AutoCAD is usually one of the most expensive AutoCAD applications, as its high-end features are relatively expensive (the cost of AutoCAD is often quoted as around $10,000). That is because AutoCAD does not offer a free version with limited functionality, unlike many competing products. However, AutoCAD is also often the most versatile AutoCAD application, meaning it can usually be used for both 3D modeling and 2D drafting. Many 3D models cannot be exported using most 3D modeling software, whereas AutoCAD is often the only option for 2D drafting. Because of its extensive features and versatility, this has made AutoCAD a very popular choice for drafting and modeling of 3D structures.
In 1983, the original version of AutoCAD was released. It was written in the C programming language. In 1984, AutoCAD became available to the general public. From 1984 to 1989, about 15 million copies of AutoCAD were sold, and it was used in the design of more than 11,000 buildings. Autodesk also won the following awards:
1990: Named most valuable CAD company by Engineering News-Record.
1994: Recognized as a best of COM in Macromedia’s Fast Company For Digital Media.
1995: Macromedia awarded AutoCAD the title of most valuable software company by Macworld.
1997: Autodesk wins the prestigious Autodesk Authoring Product of the Year Award
In 1996, BIM (Building Information Modeling) was introduced as a new 3D environment in AutoCAD. Two years later, Autodesk released a complete set of BIM tools called Autodesk Revit. AutoCAD was the only CAD application with native BIM support. Revit was primarily an architectural software for designers,

A best-of-class drafting software solution that provides CAD drafting tools and a wide range of physical manufacturing capabilities. (video: 1:13 min.)
Note this is only available for users of the Standard, Professional and Enterprise versions of AutoCAD for Windows.
Drafting tools include a 3D reference tool with DXF capabilities, placement and snap tools, one-click joins, and more. In addition, you can insert common 3D shapes such as spheres, cylinders and cones, along with 3D primitives (box, plane, sphere, etc.).
The ribbon has been redesigned to allow you to see tool and work commands across all drawing windows.
Link view drawing components between views with the “Link drawings” command. Linked drawings are seamlessly brought together in one area of the drawing, as you work on any view.
Visibility is now much more flexible with new commands to “Lock” and “Unlock” objects for use in visibilities. Unlock objects to use in visibilities, or remove visibility options from the objects. These new visibilities are available in the Visibility Manager and the New Customization User Interface (UIN). (video: 1:07 min.)
Save, launch, or open drawings using a wide range of desktop and cloud locations.
You can now open existing drawings created in many different ways. You can open from a local file or cloud service, a network share, or an FTP site. Files are accessed using the native Windows file manager, so existing Windows Explorer-based file access capabilities are unchanged. (video: 1:10 min.)
Interactive dialogs for creating and sharing files are available from virtually any point in the application. You can also launch these from the File menu.
You can now type @ and # signs in almost any text box, and they will be interpreted as text!
You can take advantage of the new underlining option in the Text Format toolbar, which includes the ability to hide and show text properties with one click.
You can use the ribbon to manage your workflows, such as temporarily disabling commands.
The AutoLISP environment has been enhanced and can now perform many more tasks, such as previewing files and parameters, creating and editing drawings, creating and exporting drawings.
