Today, AutoCAD is a central part of the design process for both mechanical and electrical/electronic engineers and architects. With more than 4.5 million active users, it is used in industry and government worldwide, including NASA, the United Nations, and the U.S. military. It is also the most-used 3D CAD program in the world. (Wikipedia)
This article focuses on AutoCAD’s construction features as a software tool for creating computer-aided drawing (CAD) files. We’ll walk through a sample file and go through some of the more useful features of the program. By the end of this article, you’ll have a basic understanding of how AutoCAD uses construction features to create a drawing.
Before You Begin
To use AutoCAD, you need:
• An.DWG file format drawing (.DWG or.DGN)
• Some additional files to set up the drawing, such as an.ai file, to store an object’s properties
• A color palette
• A font
• A drawing ruler (1/4-inch or 5/32-inch for metric or imperial)
• A mouse and a keyboard
You should always create your drawings in the latest version of AutoCAD. If you’re creating a new drawing, check your drawing template to see which version is installed. The later versions of AutoCAD will display the newest version of the drawing template installed on your computer, so it’s not necessary to manually download the template.
Creating a New Drawing
To create a new drawing in AutoCAD, follow these steps:
• Open the file in which you want to create the drawing. You can open the same drawing in multiple ways. One way is to open an existing drawing file by choosing the Open command and the Open Recent command. You can also open an existing drawing by clicking the file icon on the desktop. The icon appears when you have more than one drawing open.
• Click the New button in the top menu bar. The New dialog box opens.
• Choose Drawing Template from the New Drawing Template drop-down list, and then click Next. The current drawing template will be displayed. Click Browse to open the browsing window. The current drawing template will display in the list, and you can browse through different templates.
Case management software has been built into AutoCAD since 2007 in the form of the AutoCase module. It is a U.S. manufacturer’s case management software product available for download from Autodesk’s website. The software incorporates AutoCAD with a number of case management applications. It has received a Generally Accepted Review of “Mature” by the National Software Productivity Standard Board.
Direct X and OpenGL
AutoCAD contains an extensive collection of instructions and objects that can be used to create applications using OpenGL or DirectX. The software has a built-in animation editor and has been used in a number of highly rated Hollywood blockbuster titles such as Avatar. AutoCAD has also been used in video games such as Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Retribution.
Both the Win32 and OpenGL drivers are available for download from Autodesk.
AutoCAD has supported a number of different scripting languages since 2000, including AutoLISP, Visual LISP and VBA.
AutoLISP is a dialect of AutoCAD’s AutoLISP language.
Visual LISP is another language with native support within AutoCAD.
The Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) scripting language is another option for users.

AutoCAD can now import AutoCAD drawing objects into other AutoCAD drawings or other applications.
AutoCAD can now import or export (import) marks.
Dynamic annotations, points of interest, hotspots and other drawings features can be imported into or exported from AutoCAD.
Import data from other applications (e.g. Excel) and create graphs, tables or charts from the data.
Additional languages support for the drawing command-line interface.

A new option: VERTEXES
A new set of drawing commands that insert or edit lines, curves and surfaces with variable slope or tangent at a point.
A new option: SHAPE3D
User interface improvements to the CONNECT command.
Manipulate Geometric Texts:
Enable and disable the remaining text-representation methods.
Create text on shapes and text objects.
Text is displayed to indicate the current text representation mode.
Add text to drawings that have text objects.
