A layer can have other layers nested within it. Any sublayers are also usually displayed in the current layer view.
Using layers can significantly reduce the memory needed to display drawings. In the layers view a drawing can be viewed in 1/8th the memory needed to display the object list in the Object Browser.
A layer view can also be used to create a list of objects that are associated with a particular layer, such as layers that were created from imported objects.
