Equipped with the right applications, a computer can be of great help in virtually any domain of activity. When it comes to designing and precision, no other tool is as accurate as a computer. Moreover, specialized applications such as AutoCAD give you the possibility to design nearly anything ranging from art, to complex mechanical parts or even buildings.
Suitable for business environments and experienced users
After a decent amount of time spent installing the application on your system, you are ready to fire it up. Thanks to the office suite like interface, all of its features are cleverly organized in categories. At a first look, it looks easy enough to use, but the abundance of features it comes equipped with leaves room for second thoughts.
Create 2D and 3D objects
You can make use of basic geometrical shapes to define your objects, as well as draw custom ones. Needless to say that you can take advantage of a multitude of tools that aim to enhance precision. A grid can be enabled so that you can easily snap elements, as well as adding anchor points to fully customize shapes.
With a little imagination and patience on your behalf, nearly anything can be achieved. Available tools allow you to create 3D objects from scratch and have them fully enhanced with high-quality textures. A powerful navigation pane is put at your disposal so that you can carefully position the camera to get a clearer view of the area of interest.
Various export possibilities
Similar to a modern web browser, each project is displayed in its own tab. This comes in handy, especially for comparison views. Moreover, layouts and layers also play important roles, as it makes objects handling a little easier.
Sine the application is not the easiest to carry around, requiring a slightly sophisticated machine to properly run, there are several export options put at your disposal so that the projects itself can be moved around.
Aside from the application specific format, you can save as an image file of multiple types, PDF, FBX and a few more. Additionally, it can be sent via email, directly printed out on a sheet of paper, or even sent to a 3D printing service, if available.
To end with
All in all, AutoCAD remains one of the top applications used by professionals to achieve great precision with projects of nearly any type. It encourages usage with incredible offers for student licenses so you get acquainted with its abundance of features early on. A lot can be said about what it can and can't do, but the true surprise lies in discovering it step-by-step.
AutoCAD is Autodesk’s flagship desktop CAD product, and its roots lie in the 1980s. In 1983 Autodesk started developing “AutoDRAW” for the Apple II and TRS-80 personal computers. The initial goal of AutoDRAW was to provide a turnkey, point-and-click, drawing application for computer-aided drafting, and initially this work was done by a team of 50 programmers and artists. AutoDRAW 1.0 was released in November 1983, and sold for $9,995.
The name “AutoCAD” was derived from the AutoDRAW and AutoCAD product lines. AutoCAD 1.0 was released on December 5, 1983. During the same year, the company introduced AutoCAD Deluxe, for the IBM PC. AutoCAD Deluxe 1.0 was an add-on product to AutoCAD 1.0.
In 1985 the company started the development of Autodesk Design Review for the Macintosh, and the first official version of the software was AutoCAD 1985.
The year 1987 saw the introduction of the third generation of AutoCAD software, AutoCAD LT for the Apple II and Macintosh, and Graphic Interface (GraphicTek) for the Apple Macintosh.
AutoCAD LT was discontinued after the release of AutoCAD 2014, and GraphicTek was discontinued with the release of AutoCAD 2014.
In 1988, AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT became completely integrated, with the release of the first integrated version. AutoCAD 3.0 was released in October 1988, with AutoCAD LT 3.0 released shortly after. AutoCAD 3.0 was the first release that would come with the ability to design, create, and manage a complete facility from a single window, not just from separate windows for separate design and drafting views.
New features in AutoCAD 3.0
Engineering stress analysis and finite element analysis were included in AutoCAD 3.0. This new engineering functionality allowed users to select a surface, such as a plate, and then press the E button. AutoCAD would then start analyzing that plate and creating tools such as the tension and shear forces acting on the edges of the plate.
Other new features of AutoCAD 3.0 included:
Redesigned user interface (UI) – The design of the new UI was a key goal of the
* AutoCAD code does not have to be licensed for use in other products. It can be used to create new products and modify existing products.
* Extensions to the Autodesk database are available for the Autodesk product database.
Microsoft’s AutoCAD Product Suite (or AutoCAD Extended) is a multi-purpose program suite for creating 2D and 3D architectural designs, and 2D drafting. It provides a Windows-based interface for creating and editing 2D and 3D architectural and engineering drawings, with the ability to import 2D images for any of these tasks and it can create both AutoCAD and Visio-based files (PDF).
The following is a list of features of AutoCAD’s extended functionality:
* Create and edit 2D and 3D architectural and engineering designs
* Import and export 2D images
* Create, edit, view and export AutoCAD DWG and DXF files
* Create and edit Visio files
* Convert 2D images to AutoCAD DWG and DXF files
* Produce and share AutoCAD and Visio drawings using e-mail or a network
* Keep the drawing history and documents automatically
* Export drawings to PDF
* Reuse same drawing data from previous version of design
* Export drawings to DWG or DXF files
* Use various drawing tools and tools for engineering.

* Newer versions of AutoCAD 2016 have improved file support and the ability to load large files and open AutoCAD drawing files and are also much faster to start up and open a drawing file.
AutoCAD 2016, AutoCAD LT 2016, AutoCAD LT for Architecture 2016, AutoCAD LT for Engineering 2016, and AutoCAD LT for Mechanical 2016 have 64-bit DXF, DWG, and other file formats. This increases the maximum file size by 10 GB. AutoCAD 2016 and AutoCAD LT 2016 can read and write DXF and DWG files from and to the same file format. AutoCAD LT 2016 for Architecture and LT 2016 for Engineering and Architecture can write to the newer 4.0 version of DWG files.

Print and scan:
Print or scan your AutoCAD drawings using the built-in feature, on both Windows and Mac. You can automatically integrate your imported raster images with existing AutoCAD drawings. (video: 5:00 min.)
: Markup-aware actions:
Update actions based on the user’s markup, such as:
Changing line style to a custom graphic shape
Changing the direction of a line
Add geometry when a legend box or text string is in front
“Auto Layout” functionality:
AutoCAD automatically lays out your drawing at startup, so you can see it more clearly, with or without your own set of preferences. When you are finished working, AutoCAD automatically lays out the drawing again to ensure that it is compatible with the system’s settings. (video: 4:40 min.)
A new way to navigate:
Navigate the drawing using tools such as the Zoom, Pan, and Fit commands. These tools enable you to work directly on the screen at the same time as working on the drawing. (video: 1:12 min.)
Do more with your AutoCAD designs by making them interactive. Interactive tools include:
Raster image animations that show details as they are created
Mask tools that help you turn selected areas of your drawing into editable layers
Freehand tools that let you draw freehand directly on the drawing screen, avoiding the need for the Erase command
